A Brief History of The Tykes,

Barnsley Football Club is an English football club, based in Barnsley , South Yorkshire , and nicknamed the Tykes , with Toby Tyke being their mascot. The club was founded in 1887 as The team struggled in their first season back in the Championship. In November 2006, with Barnsley in the relegation zone, Ritchie was sacked in favour of Simon Davey . Davey managed to steer the team away from relegation in the second half of the season, and eventually finishing in 20th. The following season, a much-changed Barnsley side managed an historic FA Cup run, beating Premiership giants Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield and defending champions Chelsea 1-0 in order to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1912 , where they narrowly lost out 1-0 to fellow Championship side Cardiff City at Wembley . Barnsley also made the headlines in the 2008/09 season with new signing Iain Hume at the centre of major controversy. Following an awful elbow by Sheffield United captain Chris Morgan , Barnsley were to pursue a court case where they felt the treatment to Hume was unjust. Barnsley secured their status in the Coca Cola Championship on the last day of the 2008-2009 season. With Charlton Athletic and Southampton FC already relegated the final spot was between Barnsley and Norwich City with the tykes just needing a draw to survive. In the end Barnsley came out with a 2-1 victory against Plymouth Argyle thus condemning Norwich to relegation.
